RESURRECTION #22

RESURRECTION # 22 oil on canvas 6"x6" I am changing the name of this series to "Resurrection" because that's what decaying leaves are all about. They rot down into soil so that new life can grow.

PERSEPHONE - A START

PERSEPHONE - A START oil on canvas 22"x28" This is the very first stage of a new painting that I made yesterday. It will be Persephone emerging from her captivity in the underworld. She is bring Spring back to the frozen Earth as will be represented by a sprouting seed that I will put in her hand. I want to make her a lot younger looking and also, need to make the background look more like frozen farm fields and less like the arctic ocean. I might put Demeter, searching for her lost daughter, in the background. Updates to follow.

SHOOT 'EM UP

SHOOT 'EM UP oil on canvas 24"x30" This piece needs a few finishing touches and perhaps a new title.

HABANERA

HABANERA oil on canvas 30"x24" I call this picture Habanera because this modern scene in a local bar reminds me of Carmen.

DECAYING LEAF #14

DECAYING LEAF #14 oil on canvas 6"x6" While I am still very much interested in these close up studies of the leaves, I am doing other large paintings that I will start posting next time.

DECAYING LEAF #1

DECAYING LEAF #1 6"x6" oil on canvas This next group of paintings are ultra-close up examinations of the autumn leaves that have fallen on my driveway in the last few weeks. I am fascinated not only by the brilliant autumn colors of the leaves, but also by the little spots of decay that eventually cover the whole leaf.

TIME AFTER TIME

TIME AFTER TIME oil on canvas 18"x15" This painting has been occupying me for quite some time. I think it is about generations - the transformation of the past into the future. It will go to Soho20 gallery in NYC next month.

This is the final version of this painting. Laden with new stuff, people enter and exit a subway car.

STATE AND MAIN

I think this is the final version of this picture. I have decide to call it State and Main rather than And They Shall Inherit.

IN AND OUT OF MY ROOM

IN AND OUT OF MY ROOM
oil on canvas

I made this painting about five or six years ago and have just brought it down from the attic and made a few changes. I don't really know what it is about. Who is she? What is the raccoon doing there?

HILLS AND SKY

HILLS AND SKY

HILLS AND SKY oil on canvas 15"x35" This is the last in this series of these old paintings. I like the looser brush work and am thinking I might use it in some of my current work.

I have added a few figures to the painting "State and Main" and I have changed the title to "And They Shall Inherit".

STEP TWO - AGAIN

STEP TWO - AGAIN

In this second stage of a painting, I have eliminated two of the figures on the near platform and plan to add some on the back platform. The train tracks will be a dark gash between the two passenger platforms.

NEXT STEP

NEXT STEP

Here, the people getting off and on the subway have gained a lot of color and their shopping bags are all bigger. I'm thinking of titling this "Everybody's Shopping".

STEP ONE ON ANOTHER NEW PAINTING

STEP ONE ON ANOTHER NEW PAINTING
oil on canvas

I seem to be posting a lot of "step ones" lately. I have a lot of paintings underway. I have been thinking about starting this one for years and have finally come up with an approach. I think I will call it "STATE AND MAIN". It is about global warming. The happy children in the foreground do not realize that there is anything strange about playing at the water's edge on a city street instead of a beach. The adults are looking out to sea in a perplexed attitude as if they can't understand what has happened and that they may have had something to do with it. I plan to add more children and to make them lighter and brighter so that they will pop out from the somber background. The painting should be grim and mysterious in the back and bright and carefree in the front. That is expecting a lot, I know.

FIRST STEP ON ANOTER NEW PAINTING

oil on canvas 36"x30" I am starting on a new group of paintings based on the Santiago subway. This and the previous post are two of them. I still like working with subway pictures, even though I am living up here in rural Vermont.
