In this second stage of a painting, I have eliminated two of the figures on the near platform and plan to add some on the back platform. The train tracks will be a dark gash between the two passenger platforms.

Here, the people getting off and on the subway have gained a lot of color and their shopping bags are all bigger. I'm thinking of titling this "Everybody's Shopping".

I seem to be posting a lot of "step ones" lately. I have a lot of paintings underway. I have been thinking about starting this one for years and have finally come up with an approach. I think I will call it "STATE AND MAIN". It is about global warming. The happy children in the foreground do not realize that there is anything strange about playing at the water's edge on a city street instead of a beach. The adults are looking out to sea in a perplexed attitude as if they can't understand what has happened and that they may have had something to do with it. I plan to add more children and to make them lighter and brighter so that they will pop out from the somber background. The painting should be grim and mysterious in the back and bright and carefree in the front. That is expecting a lot, I know.
